Been lurking around the forums for a while now, took the jump to a DE a few months ago and after reading all the advice on the forum, I must say I am getting on very well and very pleased. No turning back for me.
A few strange things in my scenario tough.
I live in Dubai, DE Razors are almost impossible to find, of a decent brand. Cheap Chinese are available.
Blades are dirt cheap. I bought a box of 100 feathers (see below comment) for less than $6 USD.
Creams and soaps are limited buy some of the high end supermarkets are well stocked.
When I first started I had a cheap chinese DE Razor and the only blades I found were the 7 Oclock. This was great for learning and after I decided the way to go I bought a decent brush, some nice soaps and an EJ 89 online.
I was happy with the Gilette 7 oclock but felt the shave could be a little closer, so after reading I bought a single pack of Derbys, bug mistake... cuts, painful skin, felt like pulling... honestly these blades mad shaving a completely unpleasant experience.
After reading the advice I new the feathers were well recommended, but not for a newby, but they are available in Dubai. So into my second month of DE shaving I went and bought the feathers. I haven't looked back since. In my limited experience they are the perfect blade for me.
Finally if anyone knows anywhere good in Dubai to buy equipment please let me know.
