Does a heavy handle really improve your shave? I have to question that logic. Can anyone explain to me why it should?
For example, one is often instructed to use "no pressure" and "let the weight of the razor do the work". This makes sense if you are working with gravity. But the only time you do that is when making a downward, with the grain pass. I tried standing on my head to make the against the grain pass with that heavy handle and gravity in my favor, but I just couldn't get this Australian style technique to work for me. Also, how would this work in space? I tried last time I was in orbit but lathering was very messy.
When shaving across or against the grain, one is usually not working with the assistance of gravity. In fact a heavy handle seems like a detriment as one has to drag it up or across one's face. So how about a light handle? In fact I find this a plus, because shave head angle seems far more important than handle weight. Isn't it fine control we are after? How does a clunky old handle help this? If it does, why not have a one pound handle for that BBS shave? Or even a two pound for the gorillas out there?
In fact handle contours seem far more important. Surely you need a grip you can control.
So come on you shave dudes hit me with the logic, or if you can't perhaps this is just old shaving lore with no basis in fact? If I'm wrong educate me, but don't say "YMMV", please. I'm so sick of that old cliche. Let's hear reasons, logic and even better, experience.
