Ah choices, choices...
I've been experimenting with my Mergress, and I wish to benefit from the communities' wisdom and experience.
I've been following the conventional (I think) path of toning down the level of adjustment as I move form WTX, to XTG, to AGT. I usually go 4.5, to 3 to 2. Sometimes I touch up by buffing, or J-hooking at 1.5 or 1.
But I'm not satisfied. Mantic59 in a post suggested starting mild, then going up in aggression, then scaling down. He also recommends a milder blade like a Derby. Do you agree with either recommendation?
Geofatboy does two passes at 4 and I believe one a 3. He puts a Feather blade in his Progress.
Some folks keep the shaver at one setting only, but then why use an adjustable? Do I only want a car that runs in third gear?
Some suggest starting out each subsequent shave on a more aggressive as the blade wears. Some suggest that at 5 you are risking life and limb, but if you never take your filly for a gallop, how do you know what pleasure she can deliver?
What has been your experience? What blade works well for you, in your adjustable?
I recently acquired a mint Gillette Slim from a lovely lady in Pennsylvania. I must confess I loved to look at it but I really do not like the experience of the shave. Every setting seems harsh yet pretty ineffective, compared to my Mergress. It really put me off. Anybody looking for a mint condition Gillette Adjustable?!
What have your experiments with adjustable razors taught you? What is your sweet spot? Currently I get good shaves from my Mergress, close but not without some burn. Ah... the Alum block is a harsh teacher! I want to improve my experience, because it's such a pretty razor! I believe her kiss is too harsh. I know she can deliver more. If only I learn how to treat her right.
Mantic59 and others suggest the shave angle is steeper on the Mergress/Progress than other razors. This seems to be true. Do you agree?
