I'm a recent returner to DE shaving after many years away, and the overwhelming advice I received was to start with a closed comb razor and get various sample packs of blades to try. Once you're confident with your technique, move on to slant bar and open comb if you wish. I went for a Muhle R89; the Edwin Jagger DE89 is also a popular choice for a closed comb.
I'd make sure you try Astra SP, Gillette SharpEdge (Yellow), and PolSilver Iridium blades early on as they are highly regarded and a bit more forgiving than some blades. Other members will have their own favourites as well.
Perhaps the most important advice for someone coming from cartridges: put no pressure on the razor, the weight of the razor head is enough. No pressure really means, no pressure.
