As has been discussed on a thread elsewhere on these boards, Trader Joe's is now selling a nifty little shaving kit (pic below) for $9.99. It consists of a small brush, a jar of soap, and a bottle of balm. I used the soap (not the brush or the balm) both yesterday and today, so I thought I'd recount my experience:
The scent is a clean, soapy one with a tiny hint of spice. Very classic and pleasant, at least to my nose. The ingredients are anything but minimalist. See picture below, since I'm not in the mood to type all that in.
The soap is barely dense enough to be called a soap. Not nearly as dense as, say, Cella or Vitos. And yesterday I didn't squeeze my brush (Semogue Excelsior 1305 boar) out nearly enough. The resulting lather looked nice and foamy in my scuttle, but was far too thin when I put it on my face. I ended up having to quickly mix a little Old Spice classic tube cream in order to get a decent lather.
This morning I tried again, and this time squeezed nearly all the water out of the brush (same Semogue). The result was very different. Not much lather, but when I brushed it onto my face it was thick and slick. I did a three-pass shave with a three-day-old Astra SP and got a DFS (really BBS in most places). I probably spooned in a tiny bit more soap than I would if I'd been using Cella, but not much more, and it was the perfect amount for 3 passes.
All in all, I'd rate the soap as more than adequate. Since Trader Joe's obviously doesn't manufacture this stuff, I'd be very curious to know who makes it and where it's made.
