3 to 4 months ago I decided I wanted to start shaving with a straight razor. Bought a DOVO Diamant. I'd read that a newB should start with a name brand razor. I like the black oxiding on Diamant as I thought it would offer a bit more resistance to rust. Also, just as I don't fancy plastic, fiberglass or other synthetics for gun stocks, I have similar feelings when it comes to the scales on a razor and the Diamant has wood scales.
As I have acquired 4 more straights over the last 3 months, I've only shaved with DOVO maybe 10 times. The blade is flopping around at the pivot like it was a 40 year old razor. In fact, a couple of the razors I've bought in the last 3 months are mid 1900s and have tighter pivots.
It seems that the hole in the blade's tang must be at least .020" or 0.5mm oversized. This is ridiculous for a relatively new $300.00 razor.
Got a good deal on a used TI Bison a few weeks back. Far superior to the DOVO.
Just got in the mail today what I would assume to be a mid to late 20th century Dorko; 3 pin scales (plastic). Blade is mounted quite solid in the scales. Although the scales could have been replaced, the blade shows little, if any hone time and is quite sharp.
I do think newBs should start with a name brand razor or at least a seller with a sterling reputation who caters to newbs. However, I think modern day DOVOs should be scratched from the list.

Don't Think I'll Be Buying Another DOVO
