2 years ago I was able to convert a buddy of mine to start using a DE. As suspected he spiralled out of control into soap and razor AD's...he even got a scuttle.
This evening one of my my long time best friends came over, rocking a decent amount of stubble. We got to talking and he said "I've been waiting for like 2-3 years for you to show me how to use the razors like you do"!!
I smiled ear to ear. An hour later, he was able
to see the difference between an SB, OC and slant. He was educated on badger, boar and synthetic brushes. We talked about blades, soaps, creams and why carts and canned gels were an ok choice, but how classic shaving was a craft he could master while reflecting on his thoughts AND making time for himself. I emphasized loading the brush, use of water, beard reduction, proper angle and technique...and of course, enjoying the process. I even talked to him about B&B. He was excited to say the least.
He left my house with a stick of Arko, a new Omega 10066 boar brush including drip stand, 10 Astra SP's...and my first DE, my Merkur 34c HD. I have no sons to pass it down to, and his kids are my Godchildren. I told him he was welcome to keep the razor as long as he liked, but to give it back if things didn't work out OR pass it down to his kids when the time is right.
