My first shave last Sunday with a Valet Auto Strop razor and Feather blade was extremely harsh. I had a red, sore neck all the way through the morning. Here in a post I cited poor technique. Someone posted how bad the Feather single edged blades were. One way to determine if it was razor or blade was to use the feather in another razor. But the Feathers only fit in my Valet. I read about the modification you could make to the Feathers, so today I took the spine off a Gem blade and fitted the Feather blade to it and use it in a Gem Heavy Flat Head (G Bar), a razor I am also fairly new with.
The result: A less irritated shave, but I had to work to get a close one. A number of repeat passes to get all the stubble. The sting from the Alum block suggested I go with a post-shave balm. The good news was I did not get the visible razor burn I received from the Valet.
Conclusion: I believe my poor shave last week was a combination of lack of shaving experience with the Valet and a blade that does not live up to the reputation of its double-edged brethren. Blade and poor technique. But mostly technique.
