Hello all, new guy checking in. I got sick and tired of overpaying for the cartridges, they did a good job but it was just ridiculous to pay $45-50 for 16 cartridges. So, I started at looking for options. Thought about Dollar Shave club, too many mixed messages on the effectiveness. Looked at bulk ordering from the DSC supplier, but again the reviews for the razors was mixed.
Somehow I found myself looking at DE razors. So I waited until we got back from vacation and pulled the pin on the decision. I bought the Van den Hagen safety razor from Walmart and got a starter kit (pre-shave, cream, brush and post balm) from Art of Shaving. I'm doing okay but my hair grows all over. So far I have found that do properly get a really smooth shave, I need to shave up from the bottom of my neck first, then sideways and then from the top down. Needless to say, there is some razor burn, but this seems to be the only way to get that baby butt smooth shave.
Since the AoS shaving cream ran out, I've been using the C.O. Bigelow cream (from Bath and Body Works- made by Proraso) but I have a few questions.
1) Why do guys buy many razors? Is it more for the collecting or do the different razors provide a different shave? I mean isn't it the blade that does the most work?
2) Blades- I have a multi-trial pack that include some from Russia, Israel, etc. Is it the suggestion that I try one blade from each? If so, for how long? One shave? One week?
3) Shaving Brush- I got one with the AoS starter kit. Is it the same size as the brushes that are being sold for $30 plus? Or is it a mini brush and now that I'm a big boy and have committed to DE, then I should get another brush. Don't get me wrong- it is holding up quite well, just wondering.
4) After shave- People talk about the smell of their shaving cream/soaps, but won't that be covered by the smell of the after shave that you use?
Thanks for any and all help that you can give me!
