Several months ago I picked up some really pretty blue dyed box elder burl end grain that was "stabilized" I found it to be way to fragile to make scales from, but it was so pretty I kept experimenting. The last straw was today I think. Even skimmed in carbon fiber it is to fragile to make scales out of. I learned a lot and in the end I think this gets put in the category of learning experience. Who does the stabilizing is important and NEVER use end grain is probably more so. On the plus side, carbon fiber is enjoyable to work with and is hugely strong.
