I decided to try and make my own scales to replace the bone on my old Wosty. I have never made scales or really worked with wood much at this scale. I never honed a blade before I honed the Wosty wedge and that turned out alright so I'm going for it. I bought some pre-formed water buffalo scales online but I don't like the shape so I went to a local woodworking shop to see what exotic woods I could find. I ended up with a scrap piece (1/2" x 1" x 12") of East Indian Rosewood and a 13/16" x 13/16" x 12" piece of Kingwood:

The kingwood is my favorite but the scale design I sketched is a little too wide for the material I have so I'll try the rosewood for now. I have a friend that will rip both woods for me into 1/8" thick pieces. Does anyone have any suggestions on the final finish for either wood? (lacquer, shellac, oil, etc?) The original scales are narrower and will fit on my kingswood piece so that will be my next project.
