Now having a variety of soaps (TOBS, Trumpers, EJ, MWF, B&M) and brushes (Shavemac, Kent, Rooney, Muhle, Zen Shave), I've had the opportunity to try several combinations of each, and have come to the conclusion that brush selection has a significant effect on the performance of a given soap (with regard to lathering), just as different soaps will perform differently with the same brush. Natural or synthetic, short or high loft, size of the knot, all make a difference. So I've begun to sort out my harder to lather soaps (Trumpers Rose maybe?) with my super-lathering brushes (Kent B8, Shavemac), and it has made a world of difference in energy expended for my morning shave. Other stellar soaps (Tabac?) I can pair with a Muhle synthetic and get a super lather in about three seconds. Consequently, I now have no bad soap or bad brushes, just need the right combination. Maybe intuitive to the old timers, but it was an education to me.
