I have a 60 year-old steel wool beard - maybe like 40 grit sandpaper. It takes sharp blade to to plow the road. I shave daily for work. My preferred combo is an ATT R1 with either a Feathers or Polsilver blade. I like sharp. When I travel and I do not have the time or inclination for a full, careful prep, I use an EJ89 with a Voskhod blade. The combo is surprisingly smooth and easy. I always have to be careful with the ATT/Feathers. In the blink of an eye one could, well, lose an eye with the supersharp Feathers. The Voskhod, a Teflon coated blade, is not as sharp as the Feathers, but far smoother than the Feathers. I have never really understood how a blade could be less sharp and yet, smoother.
On a lark I ordered a few Treet carbon blades from the Great Blade Exchange. My first try was with the legendary Black Beauties in my ATT. They were OK. Not bad. A bit of pulling. Decent shave. This morning I switched to the Durasharp, a carbon blade with a Teflon coating. My expectations were low after the shave with the Black Beauty. To my surprise, I had a perfect shave. Smooth - Easy - Sharp. A single WTG pass with a bit of buffing here and there, and as if by magic, a lovely shave. My first impression is that the Durasharp is equally smooth to the Voskhod, but sharper!
Which leads me to my question: Does Teflon reduce drag sufficiently to give a smoother, less irritating shave? Is there magic in Teflon?
Cheers
