After reading all the praise modern synthetics are getting I decided to give one a whirl. As is my custom of keeping everything vintage I decided to reknot an old Klenzo B985 butterscotch handle. I had concerns that with synthetic hair it might look incongruous and cheesy but I decided to try it anyway.
I opted for a Pur-Tec from Virgina Sheng in 19mm (which was receiving 0 bids at $2.99) since the Klenzo was sporting a 20mm socket and I wanted it to appear original (more on this later).
Once it was done I was very pleasantly surprised at both the appearance and performance of this "new fling." I find that the tips of the hair are as soft as a child's prayer but it also offers plenty of backbone for a face latherer like myself. It performs admirably with both soaps and creams and easily holds enough lather for three passes and perhaps more. I find the flow through and release of lather perfect whether with swirling or painting motions. I had read postings about synthetics not holding water but I truly cannot tell the difference. I didn't have to adjust my routine to accommodate this issue at all. I simply squeeze the hairs and flick it a couple of times as I do with my badgers.
What I did not like was that although I had ordered a 19mm knot, and truly the plug at the bottom did measure 19mms, The insidious design of this button has a built in flare above it which resulted in my having to enlarge the socket to 23mm in order to achieve the desired loft of 52 MM which I find ideal for this particular application. I would prefer if the knot diameters listed by the vendors were reliable or at least listed to warn us that handles will have to be modified if you opt for a loft other than the OEM one.
Overall I am very pleased. I am enjoying using this brush immensely and although I am a traditionalist I am facing the conundrum of possibly favoring the new synthetic over the old tried and true badger. For the economy, performance, and appearance I am happy to recommend the Pur-Tec for anyone.
I may have gone over to the Dark Side never to return.
