I'm a newbie, and had my 5th DE shave this morning. I've been shaving with a Merkur 34C, Derby Extras, both a Simpsons Berkeley best badger & AOS pure badger brushes, both Synergy Shave Soap (Bay Rum) and AOS Lavender Cream, and AOS AS balm.
From my first shave to my fifth, I feel like I've reached a few conclusions and learned a few things, and here they are:
1) I am much better at creating a good lather with the AOS cream than the Synergy soap. I have no doubt that this is a direct result of my technique and I'll get better with soap, I'm just not there yet. Seems like a bit of a steeper learning curve with soaps.
2) A Derby blade is much different on its first shave than on its fourth. I discarded my first blade after four shaves, and my fifth shave this morning felt like a much sharper blade with a new one in. After a few nicks on shave #1, I didn't have another until I put in a new blade on shave #5. I like the Derby's, but I have nothing to compare them to, and plan on trying out Astra after this current blade runs its course. My sense is I'm going to want to transition to a sharper blade as I refine my technique.
3) I think I'm going to develop a brush obsession. My AOS brush is fairly old and lacks backbone. The Simpsons Berkeley is brand new, and I like it a lot so far, however is very small. I'm already ready to buy yet another one to try out. I think this is going to become a problem!
4) AOS AS balm is fantastic. Feels great, scent is great (Lavender), stops nicks almost immediately. I just like everything about it. I have a pretty full bottle, if there's one product I'm totally satisfied with at this point and have no desire to replace (yet), it's this AS. (I'm sure this will change as I get more adventurous).
5) I'm having a lot of fun, and for the first time in my life look forward to 'shave day' (I shave every other day).
Thanks for listening, can't wait to keep getting better and exploring more in the world of wet shaving! :thumbup1:
