Simpsons Shaving Cream - A Brief Review

I have had my eye on Simpsons Shaving Cream for a while now. I prefer mildly scented/unscented creams and I have always liked the way the British creams lather. I hesitated to buy a tub of Simpsons because while the $25/tub is not terribly high, the tub only contains 4.25oz of cream making it equally expensive per ounce to Castle Forbes and other top end British creams. At that price it better be good. Last weekend Bullgoose Shaving put Simpsons on sale for $15/tub. I jumped at the opportunity to give it a try.

I have always thought that my face is a good test bed for shaving creams. I have a grizzly beard but dry skin. I use an aggressive razor and a sharp blade to hack down my beard(ATT H1/Polsilver SI), but if my shaving cream does not provide adequate cushioning and lube, my chin pays the price with weepers and razor burn. My favorite creams are: T&H Ultimate Comfort; Nancy Boy Signature; AOS Unscented. Musgo Real also works well for me. The list of creams that have left my face screaming for mercy is long.

The Simpsons arrived yesterday. I eagerly opened up the tin to find what appeared to be a meager amount of cream. I would say the tin was 2/3rds full. I don't have a scale at home, and I know these things are sold by weight and not by volume, but this was surprising to say the least. More cream or a smaller tub would be more appropriate.

Simpsons lists itself as an unscented cream. Most "unscented" creams do have some scent, of course. To my nose Simpsons is very very neutral with a slight sweetness to it which remained even after lathering. Those who prefer unscented creams will like Simpsons.

I did my usual prep this morning and decided to use my Rudy Vey 28mm Chubby 2 Band for my inaugural shave. The loft is set at a low 50mm for maximum scrub. I loaded a dab of the soft cream on the brush and added a touch of water to my shaving bowl. Not much happened at first. Not much happened at second. I added water bit by bit and when I got to the right amount(seemed like more than most creams) the bowl exploded in a thick, rich lather. I am not sure if I have ever used a cream that opened up like the Simpsons. Once you hit the sweet spot with the right amount of water, this cream is really special.

The shave was easy and remarkably smooth. Both the cushioning and lube were first rate. There was not a single weeper, not even that damn spot around my Adam's Apple that torments me every day. Even after a second pass I had gobs of cream left in the brush. I will use less cream tomorrow, for sure.

Simpsons Shaving Cream is first rate. I would put it right up there with my favorites. Maybe with a few more shaves it will jump to the top of the list. It is priced to compete with other high end creams, but I am happy to report that it is worth the price.

Happy Shaving.
