Hi, all! Mike here... Well I have been at this for about a month now, and have some interesting observations...
I have been wet shaving with Cart and gel or foam for 32 years. First DE shave was about a month ago. I have a Merkur 23C /180 long handle, and started with AoS unscented shaving cream and aCaptain conk badger brush. Within 2 weeks switched to soap... Specifically, after reading reviews here, Captain Conk Almond soap. That really helped. I am now, also from these reviews, using the Nivea Energy scrub as a pre-shave about half the time.
after 2 weeks we went on a trip to Disney so I used some disposable Schick Titaniums carts and the AoS cream. Shaved me smooth, but felt awful. Couldn't wait to get back to DE.
i have a heavy beard but sensitive skin... I used to have to use the styptic pencil even with a cart...
i also used used to have 5 o'clock shadow by noon. Back in the decade before I met my wife, more than 1 ex-girlfriend used to ask me to shave when I got to her place on Friday evening before she would even kiss me.
now... With the DE, the #1 thing I notice is that my heavy shadow is much diminished!!!! I can even go into the office if I shaved the morning before and look almost respectable.
My skin on my face is also softer!
On the downside, it Is taking me almost 20 minutes to shave in the morning, as opposed to 8 minutes with the cart... Even then, for a cart, I took my time.
but I really enjoy my shaving time now... When I get to be alone. When the wife and kids are crowding around and the kids are screaming and my wife is yelling back at them, and I can't concentrate like I want to and can't hear the whiskers being sliced... To use a phrase from a friend... it really harshes my mellow ;-)
the eh thing about the Merkur is that it may not be aggressive enough for at least certain areas of my face... I go over them, like of all things my cheeks, 2 or 3 times ATG alone, not to mention WTG and XTG, and it is still not quite close enough. I purchased a 1962 or 1963... Forgot which, have to check, Gillette Adjustable Slim, which should help solve the problem once Father's Day comes and I get to start using it ;-)
oh, oh, I am using Bic Platinum Chrome blades for the most part and am quite happy with them, although I just put a Feather in yesterday... And, unlike Week One, did NOT mutilate my face with it!
