I'm still new to DE shaving (just changed to my 2nd blade this week).
I got gutsy yesterday and shaved with no prep (other than shower before) and used Gillette Sensitive spray-can foam to experiment.
The blade felt a little closer to my skin. Not as in I got a closer, better shave but as in it felt like there was less of a buffer zone between the blade and my face.
In the end, I did not experience any irritation or nicks either and when I finished with my Alum block as per my usual routine, there seemed to be less stinging too.
I did notice on the first pass WTG, it didn't seem to cut as much of the hair as doing a good prep with lather and brush. However, after doing XTG and ATG, I ended up with an almost identical shave (but in less time because of no prep work). Skin still feels smooth and soft.
edit: my usual routine is shower before (but not always), Poraso Pre-Shave, Klar's Shaving Soap, WTG/XTG/ATG, Alum Block, Kiehl's After-Shave Balm
