Gents,
I picked up a 5/8" Boker "King Cutter" today, that I'm planning to make my first restoration attempt. Seems to be in decent shape, save for one broken scale (with some seemingly random letters and numbers scratched into it too).
I'm thinking I'll pull the scales off, and clean up the blade first. There is very minimal rust on the blade, and I suspect cleaning should go relatively well. Thinking I'll start around 600/800 grit (hopefully that's coarse enough to clean up the minor stuff), but will move to something heavier if required. On a blade in this shape, how much sanding can the etching on the blade take before it starts to disappear?
Not sure what I'm going to do for scales yet. Thinking I might try making a set out of some sort of dark wood if I can source a few decent pieces locally (suggestions where I may find some?).
Where can I get pins/washers, or brass rod to make pins out of?
