Hi everyone,
Wanted to say "hello" and "thank you" as a newbie to DE shaving and this board. I've literally dealt with terrible shaving experiences for 25+ years and can now say, without a doubt, that after making the switch from disposable razors, canned gels/creams, and/or dry shaving with electrics, that I have experienced one of the most remarkable turnarounds I've ever experienced - and it happened overnight!
I have very sensitive skin (Irish/German guy) and after every shave I'd have bumps and cuts and a burn that lasted three days. I purposely held off from shaving for a week just to let my skin recuperate. Then I'd put myself through it all over again as the beard began to grow out. Crazy.
I moved to an electric set to retain a 1mm whisker simply to avoid the burn. This worked well but obviously I had to retain a 5 o'clock shadow all day/every day. When I did have to fully shave (weddings, biz meetings, etc.) I'd tear up my skin once again and go through the pain while trying to hide my razor burned neck beneath a fully buttoned shirt and tie. Not fun.
I literally gave up until a buddy of mine provided me some Art of Shaving samples - which I finally got around to using - with a disposable razor. The shave went fairly well - better than others but the burn on my neck continued. BUT - this got me into searching for a solution to my issue. I figured I was missing one last piece to the puzzle and it's because of this board (and Amazon) that I found out about DE razors, creams to apply, brushes, etc. And after reading many other razor burn stories similar to mine I made the jump to purchasing a DE razor with the appropriate products. I settled on a Feather DE razor, Feather blades, Proraso sensitive skin pre-shave, Proraso anti-irritation shave cream, and Proraso post shave anti-irritation balm.
To say I wasn't nervous the first time would be a lie. After reading the stories of faces getting sliced and diced I was freaking out! But - after that first swipe, I got it. It just made sense. And I relaxed and completed my first DE shave. One WTG pass only - and a few nicks to show for my good work - but here's the kicker - ZERO BURN!
Shave two went even better with ZERO nicks and again ZERO BURN! Shave three, four, five...HALLELUJAH! This completely solved all my shaving/burning problems!
To some, to say this has changed my life may sound a little strange. But after living with a burning face for the vast majority of my adult life, I now feel completely liberated and actually look forward to shaving! And again this board had a LOT to do with my decision to take the plunge and give it a try and for that I am thankful. I never knew this style of shaving still existed and that this style of shaving would/did COMPLETELY fix an issue I'd dealt with for years - so thanks to all here who unknowingly provided me the information to make this decision. I truly appreciate it and hope to contribute in some way as I continue to get comfortable with this style of shaving!
