So recently I ordered the 2013 R41 head from Connaught shaving as I already own the R89 and wanted to give this "beast" a shot. After reading countless reviews on this razor stating that it's essentially the most aggressive razor currently being made, I popped it on my existing Muhle handle and carefully, if not nervously began to shave.
The first shave was with a Red Personna, which I knew was a bit milder and more forgiving than the Polsilver SI that I usually use in my other razors. By the end of the 3 passes, I had an excellent shave. BBS over 95% of my face with just a few tiny hints of stubble in my usual trouble spots. No nicks, no cuts, no weepers. Really? I was astounded by how "not scary" this razor turned out to be on my first shave with it.
So yesterday morning I decided to load in my Polsilver SI, which normally gives me closer, more longer lasting shaves than any other blade I've used. The result was essentially the same. An uneventful, smooth 3 pass shave. I did get 1 weeper under my chin and one above my lip, both from going against the grain on the 3rd pass, but that happens occasionally even with my other razors. My face did feel a bit "warm" for about an hour after the shave, but that sometimes happens with the Weber as well.
I was thinking that as aggressive as this razor is supposed to be, that I would more than likely get a longer lasting shave, but interestingly, I can't say that's the case. I have just about the same amount of stubble 30 hours later than I would expect to have using my Merkur 38C or my Weber PH. In fact, my conclusion is that FOR ME, the 38c, Weber, and r41 all provided very similar results with regard to smoothness and closeness. I mean, to be completely fair, I'd say that if I wanted to pick the razor that was most likely to give me a completely irritation free shave, I would pick the 38c followed by the Weber. Also, I will say that with the r41, I can definitely feel more of the blade on my skin compared to the other two, but that's the only real significant difference for me.
So with all the hype out there about the r41, I'm a little bit surprised that this has been my experience, limited as it has been. Has anyone else that has used the r41 had similar results? Have I just been blessed with a face that takes to the r41 better than most?
Looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts.
