A Surrey boar bristle brush was the first brush I ever used when I started shaving as a boy. I used a boar brush all through my college years and into adulthood. The nicest boar brush I ever owned was an Omega professional 48.
15 years ago I bought a Saville Row 3124 which was my first badger brush. I have used it almost exclusively since then. Other badger brushes I have tried were by Altesse, Muhle, and Mason Pearson, but I ended up giving away all but the Saville Row.
Lately I have been seeing what feels to me like renewed interest in boar brushes on the boards. I have enjoyed learning a little more about them.
The other day I came across my old Omega and took it out for a spin. Oh, my goodness, what an experience! It was well broken in, and I had forgotten how soft it was. Soft soft soft. It is a bigger brush, both in loft, knot size, and handle, which fits well and feels good in my large hands. I use hard soap exclusively, and it really did the trick on an old puck of Burma Shave (pity the soap is discontinued; I loved it for years).
I used to think "The brush was only $10.00. How good can it be?". Not any more. It is a fine brush. My only complaint has been that the chrome-effect handle leaves a little to be desired, aesthetics-wise. But what a great brush! I definitely got more than I paid for in this instance.
For those of you just starting out with wetshaving, do not feel bad about starting with a good boar brush. You don't have to spend mega bucks on a badger brush to have a magnificent experience. Get a boar brush and start shaving already! It will change your life. :001_smile
