Gentlemen,
I would appreciate some input on how to get my honing to be more consistent. At the moment it is a bit of a hit and miss affair in the sense that half the time I get an acceptable shave and the other half is horrible and needs to be redone.
I use a sigma power 1k as a bevel setter followed by a sigma 6k and then finish on a coti or 3 micron then 1 micron lapping film. Refreshing edges I just start at the 6k.
I have decided in the last few weeks to put some effort into getting this right and learning the skills I need to be consistent and repeatable and believe I have identified some problems and some things I need to figure out.
Firstly I need someway, in addition to shaving, to determine if I have a decent edge. At a gross level my arm is pretty hairless and that has helped to some extent. As for HHT testing: my understanding is you can't use treated/coloured hair for a reliable test - this is all I have at my disposal unless my son or I volunteer to grow our hair a lot longer :biggrin1:. Is this true? Reason I ask is I have tried doing an HHT on razors that shave at the level I really like and it is a bit of a hit and miss affair as some hairs will cut and others not. Possibly they aren't even HHT1 but if that is the case then I clearly have low requirements :blushing:. Should I look at getting a loupe? What magnification?
Secondly I bought my coti when I was pretty budget constrained so it is a long/narrow bout (28mm) but a pretty piece of petite blanche. I regularly destroy my edge on the coti i.e. cut's arm hair so-so off of the 6k and then won't off the coti. Believe this is just poor technique i.e. not keep razor flat. Which is why I started playing with lapping film on 6mm plate glass.
Hence I also need to address my finisher:
I am not the "collect many hones guy" but would prefer a natural stone for my finisher - for purely romantic reasons. Hence I am considering either getting a sigma 13k or a bigger coti that is at least 40mm wide so that I can eliminate some of my technique failures. The sigma is a cheaper option with massive real estate and I am assuming it will do as a finisher and I can get it at a competitive price with reasonable shipping from toolsfromjapan. Would like some advice on this and would be willing to get the 13k and another natural stone (coti, japanese or something else) if that would be wiser.
Other than sorting my "measuring" and getting my finisher in place I am assuming I just need to keep at it and try to figure out what I am doing when it works out for me. For a long time I know my biggest problem was simply not doing enough laps and progressing to the next hone too quickly but think I have got better at that.
Your wisdom would be appreciated.
regards
