I just finished my first shave with a vintage razor, and I'm quite pleased with the results. It's also the first time that I used C.O. Bigelow (Proraso) Green shave cream and Aqua Velva AS.
The razor was a Gillette 40's style Super Speed (year code Y-2, 1953 if I'm reading everything correctly) that I received in retiredguns' Just add Water PIF. I loaded up with a Derby Extra blade as that's what I've used the most so far. At first, it seemed to be a bit more aggressive than my EJ DE89, but I think that was more of a matter of the angle that I was using. I did three passes, and got a DFS/BBS everywhere but the usual problem patch on my neck. I think it's a great razor, and I'll use it quite frequently!
I was really impressed with the Bigelow shave cream as well. I had my doubts, because I had tried cream in a tube many years ago--back in my canned goo days--and had no idea that you were supposed to lather it with a brush. I loved the menthol smell and feel. It was nice and slick, and didn't leave me the slightest bit dry.
I finished off with a big splash of Aqua Velva. I bought the bottle at Family Dollar a few days ago (along with a bottle of the Vi-Jon Spice AS that I think smells like the Old Spice I remember as a kid). It seemed to have more of a "kick" than either the Vi-Jon Spice or Masters Bay Rum that I have been using, but the burn went away quickly, and left my face feeling nice and smooth. I like the smell (Ice Blue), and will definitely keep it in stock as well.
I do want to thank retiredguns one more time for his generous PIF. It included not only the razor and cream, but two brushes and a pack of Gillette 7 O'clock blades--an awesome addition to a newbie's den!
