Lately I tried to make scales using horn plates. Problem is, that two times already, while thinning out the plates, large horizontal cracks appeared, that were not apparent at beginning and that were separating layers of the plates from each other rendering the material unusable. The last time this happend I was almost finished and I had to toss the thing after nearly an hour of cutting and sanding. Is it the poor quality of the raw material I have or is it something you have to live with when using horn for making scales?
