Part 4 – Attempt 3, the beginning
Thursday 15th December 2016. I’m sitting at work on my lunch having a browse through eBay. I remember seeing Gold Dollar razors that had been ‘fixed’ and honed at a not unreasonable price. Sure enough I find the seller and discover they sell a honed razor and a 3” strop as a package. I also find a group on Facebook via the listing and join up. After having a think about it and deciding this time not to spend lots of money I get home and go ahead with the purchase. While excited about its impending arrive there is a touch of trepidation about the situation.
Monday rolls around and I come home to a package – It’s arrived. First impressions are that it looks and feels cheap – well it is! – but I know the blades are supposed to be reasonable quality and it has been honed by someone who knows what they are doing. I set my morning alarm slightly earlier than usual to give me a chance to take a bit more time than normal.
So, here it is, the first shave, the big one, the moment you’ve all been waiting for, and…
IT SUCKED!
I knew the learning curve was going to be steep – what I didn’t realise is that it’s vertical! My blade angle was all wrong, I used too much pressure, and I also managed to scuff my cheek. BUT, I completed my first straight shave! Albeit with a fair bit of irritation, but I had done it. Finally.
