Having trouble getting a close shave. Would be great to get some tips.

I’ve been using a DE razor for a month now. Just made a long, first post on my experiences so far:

I’m converted and can no longer go back to cartridges. But I’m having trouble getting close shaves. My technique and, perhaps, my equipment needs some help. If I scrape away a lot, I can get very, very close. But it seems as though it should not take as much effort as I am putting in. It’s possible that my whiskers are wire like, but maybe that’s not a good enough explanation here.

The issue I’m having is that I need to run the razor across my whiskers abut 20 times before getting things down to a really smooth shave. Seriously. It takes me that many short strokes in some, but not all, spots. Especially under the chin and on my cheeks. Other areas are easier. First with the grain, then across, then a bunch of times against the grain. I can hear the blade against the whiskers. (This audible feedback is a great thing coming from cartridges.) So I’d think that there would then be cutting down of the whiskers, but not so much. I can get there, eventually. But it’s kind of harsh on the skin.

Here is how I am doing it: Wet the face, rub on Proraso pre shave cream, use a brush to paint on creamy lather made in a bowl from white Proraso shave cream, with the grain pass with an Astra SP blade in an Edwin Jagger DE89 that now has a Maggard MR-11 handle. I’m trying to be at 30 degrees (perhaps keeping at 30 degrees is where I need the most work?), no pressure, washing the blade often. The first pass takes off little. Then I relather. Sometimes I go across the grain. Often, these days, I just go to against the grain on my second pass. Scrape, scrape scrape, and I get there. But it takes many such passes and several reapplications of lather. My last pass is made after washing up with soap, when I can best feel where the remaining whiskers are. I give it another go with a soapy face.

Try a more aggressive blade and/or razor? I gather that the DE89 is mild and difficult to get a close shave with? Any suggestions for what to try next? Most likely it’s my technique that is need of help?

OK, wise gents, where am I going wrong? What should I do differently? This forum has been an amazing resource as I get into DE shaving. Thanks!
