I'm only about 10 shaves in with straights. Things are moving along great. So far...so good. I have taken a different approach: I've purchased 3 straights right out of the gate. A Dovo best 5/8 half hollow, Hart round point 6/8 quarter hollow and a Bismarck 6/8 full hollow. I figured that al things being equal and not knowing what you don't know I'd get an ice right out of the gate which felt better for me. The Bismarck was my first but. It was a an eye opener first shave. The noise and the size was intimidating. I avoided my neck and got an ok shave. I sat back and realized how much more important it is to know your beard map with a straight razor. After a few shaves with it I felt more confident but still a bit intimidated by it. I picked up the Dovo and the first save with that was better. I know each shave gets better but I felt the difference in the razor itself. I thought I was going to be a 5/8 person. After a few shaves I was feeling much better about things. Taking it slow and handling my neck much better. I tell you, holding that blade on your neck and going ATG is thrilling. I picked up the bismarck and dam if it didn't feel god this time around. My technique improving no doubt. Along the way I have only suffered two bites. Each on my check area and figured out I was stretching the skin with the blade still resting on it. Anyway, I felt like both razors were different enough to give me some variety. Then RAD kicked in and I sprung for the Hart. I live near classic Shaving so stopping by is too easy. First shave with the Hart was a surprise. Wondered if I had made a mistake. The next two were far better... including todays which was BBS. I like each of the razors I and continue to rotate them pretty much on a three shave basis.
I have an old straight that is so dull that I use it and practice my strokes. I practice a lot...stretching finding my own pass attacks that work best and reduce strokes. I hope that I will get to the point that I can get my shaves done quicker like I do with a DE. I know right now I have to avoid the temptation to speed things up.
The variety that straight razor shaving has injected into my shaving is wonderful. I shave in the shower with my DE and use creams. I of course shave out of shower with my straights and I am using more soaps and bowl lathering. Even just sprung for a brush skuttle from Dirty bird.
Just wanted to share.
