Hello! After years of spending far too much money on inferior disposable razor's, I've decided to give wet shaving a try. We were cleaning out my Grandma's apartment, and I remembered something that Grandpa had when I was just a kid that used to fascinate me...his old school razor's. I believe the GEM is from the 1940s or so, but I have no idea how old the Gillette is. The Gillette needed some serious cleaning up, but came out quite nicely.
Anyway, the only razors I could find last night were the CVS brand ones, so I loaded one up in the GEM, and just used some regular shaving cream I still have. For a new guy I did not do too bad...I had a slight bit of irritation, a few tiny blood spots that went away after rinsing with cold water, and a damn good close shave. I used the 2 pass method...shaving with, then against the grain.
My plan for now is to get a badger hair brush, some Proraso menthol and eucalyptus, and a good stone bowl or cup to mix it in, but I'm looking for some advice on razors. I think the way to go would be to try a sampler pack, and would love some pointers on where would be a good place to pick one up. Also, I've read that BIC blades can be good for newbies, is this true? Now for some pics:
I believe this razor to be reasonably old, but honestly have no idea:
The GEM is what I think Grandpa mainly used, but have zero idea of its age. This is the one I used last night, and I thought it was cleaner than it is as you can still see some green here and there:blush:
