So bout a year ago I finally got fed up with torturing myself with the popular overpriced multiblade razors. I bought the cheapest DE safety kit I could find just to try it out.. And for $40 I was blown away and regretted not doing it years ago. I spent $40 total on the razor, soap mug with soap, shave butter, and razors... So I figure I can get a decent upgrade if I spend $50 or so on just the new razor.
I've got a few gripes I'm looking to solve with this upgrade.
(my current razor is the van Der hagen stubby razor)
When I shave with my current DE razor, sometimes it leaves a streak of hair down the middle of the blade after a stroke. There is not a full gap across the base of my razor, there is a "cross bar" for reinforcement I'm guessing. This crossbar gets clogged with hair immediately after starting a stroke and causes the streak. (see pic)
Do most razors have this? Or do most razors have a bigger gap between the razor base and blade so that this doesn't become a problem?
My next complaint is similar to the above.. The gap between the base and razor is very very thin. It's so thin that when hair gets clogged after one stroke, sometimes it's so clogged that running under water isn't enough to clear it. I have to literally open the razor, remove the blade, and run my fingers over it to remove the hair. Is this normal? I don't think it's the soap I use, as it happens with soap, butter, and the thin "shave secret" stuff.
My current razors dial has no settings, it's just free tightening so I have to guess with it. Can I get a razor with "locking" settings in this price range?
And, I definitely need a longer handle but that will be an easy fix.
Can I fix these problems with buying a razor around $50? What are a few models I should look at?
