Going to return my first DE tomorrow

Greetings all, new around here.

So about a month ago I bought my first DE razor off of Amazon, a "Simba Series Smoothere." Tomorrow I'm sending it back where it came from. I've tried shaving with it about fifteen times now and have yet to have a single shave where I wasn't cut. Sometimes it would be a handful of nicks, more often my neck and jaw looked like I'd taken a cheese grater to them. This was in spite of watching countless how to videos on Youtube and taking my time (I averaged fifteen minutes per shave.) So back it goes.

I'm game for taking another shot at using a safety razor but I don't want a repeat of this experience. It should be noted that for me shaving, like all grooming chores, is just that. A chore. Something to be done with maximum efficiency so that I can get back to things I actually want to be doing (Jerry Seinfeld had a bit where he said that if your body was a car, you wouldn't buy it. Too much maintenance, and I heartily agree.) I've heard others say that they actually enjoy shaving with a double edge, and if that's your thing cool, but for me it's a numbers game. I don't like shelling out three or four dollars per cartridge for my Mach 3, even tho I'm very satisfied with it otherwise. So for me safety razor shaving is a means to an end, and that end is saving money.

Anyway, I'm hoping to take one more stab at this (pardon the pun) but I don't want to waste money and blood again. What I'm looking for is a close shave (with my Mach 3 my routine was one pass with, and one against, the grain leaving a completely smooth result with essentially no irritation.) If I can get that with a DE I'm willing to put in the effort to learn the skill. If not, well, at least I made a go of it. So I guess I'm looking for recommendations. First off, I'm considering getting a starter kit such as this one here. I've never used soap and a brush before, if that helps things I'm down with it. Also, I need tips for going against the grain. I've used no pressure at all, holding the handle lightly between my thumb and the tip of my forefinger but that's not enough to sprout leaks like a sieve. So I'd greatly appreciate any feedback, both on kit and technique.
