So I just went ahead and bought a 1.5" x 5" laminated/double sided blue and yellow coticule hone along with a strop and some chromium oxide paste as I have a vintage early 50's Russian straight razor(my first real straight) coming to me in the mail and I want to be able to maintain it myself, though I understand that learning how to hone a straight razor may be a learning curve just as steep(steeper?) as learning to shave with it.
So as it is coming to me from ebay I have no real idea as to how the bevel on the blade might be, though it looks to be in good overall condition based on the pictures I saw. I understand that the stone I bought is best suited to honing, just curious to see if the BBW side of it could be used to set the bevel if required? I'd prefer to do this myself over sending it to someone else simply because it's something I want to learn to do, I'm thinking that resurrecting old razors could be a fun hobby. I know that getting a 1000 grit or less stone is most ideal for setting a bevel but I'm trying to keep this relatively cheap for the time being, that's why I got a 1.5" wide stone even though I know it'd be easier to learn on a wider stone.
I have a small credit card sized diamond plate with medium and fine grit sides that I hope to use to flatten the stone itself, I presume this should work?
I'm kind of rambling on, my question and point of starting this thread was really just to ask if it is possible to bevel set with the blue side of the hone? It is advertsed as being equivalent of 4000 grit, I'm hoping I can lower that a bit if I get a slurry stone(comes with a slurry stone but only for the yellow side).
Thanks in advance for replies.
Setting bevel with a coticule?
