How I became a wet shaver.

Hello everyone, I have visited this forum infrequently in the past but over the last couple of weeks I have been lurking quite a bit in a couple shaving forums. So I thought the time was right to join the community of shavers here. I thought I would start off with how I became a wet shaver, I think it is funny and you might as well.

It all started a couple years ago maybe more, I honestly don't remember when it all happened but I remember what happened. I was watching the History channel when an ad for the Micro Touch One with Rick from Pawn Stars can on. I had never heard of a DE safety razor and was intrigued. So I did a Yahoo search and found myself on this forum and then went on to Amazon and started compiling a kit. At the time I had done very little research and most chose what was cheapest, except for the cream. I picked a Merker 23c, a Escali bager, TOBS Eton, and a stand, I then put everything in the save for latter category and left it there until three weeks ago.

So why three weeks ago when I had this stuff sitting around for years? While I do occasionally make impulse buys other times I do research on an item and them put it on the back burner until a year later.

There where two factors that drove me to become a wet shaver. One was what I had previously been using for shaving, unlike many I have never shaved my face with a cartridge razor. In fact the only cartridge razor I own Gillette sent me for my 18th birthday. So I have always used an old Braun electric shaver which had several problems such as needing recharged after about three shaves with a noticeable decrease in power after two. I also never could get the actual shaving head to cut for whatever reason as a result I always used the the trimmer blade. Which never gave anything near a close shave and I was left with permanent noticeable stubble. Shaving was not something I enjoyed that along with the above issues resulted in me forgetting or putting off shaving sometimes for a week. Last month I had had enough so I decided to make the change to wet shaving.

The other contributing factor was that I like do things differently then the crowd and despite my age I like to go old school. Which mad DE shaving a natural choice.

On Nov. 1 I bought the previously picked out items off of Amazon and a 100 blade sample pack with 50 different blades. I made the mistake of buying stuff before doing research beyond Amazon reviews, and researching it while it was being shipped. Thankfully the only bad item I bought was the Escali brush which I think a lot of use made that mistake.

Then my addictive personality set in. Before I had even received my Amazon shipment I had ordered a tub of Proraso Green soap and a puck of Mitchel's Wool Fat to try out, along with an Omega 10066 to replace the Escali I had yet to receive, from WCS . I also picked up a puck of William's Mug Shaving Soap just to experience it along with other aftershave products locally. Everything except my blade sample pack arrived, I had bought a five pack of Astra SP to use in the mean time and I had my first wet shave on Nov. 13 and...

It changed my whole outlook on shaving. Was it a close shave? No it was perhaps a little bit closer than my electric but not much. I also got irritation which I never had before but it was fun and I looked forward to the next shave to improve. Shaving became something I look forward to do and find fun and relaxing and have a drive to improve upon.

After that my love of a good deal and of tinkering/experimenting reared its ugly head I also figured I could use a travel kit. Today I received a 40's Gillette SS and a restored Friedr Baurmann & Sohn SR. With WCS having a 20% off deal for Black Friday I have a WCS open comb head, Simpson Wee Scot, and an IRS #827 strop on the way. I also made the mistake of stopping by the Maggard website and I bought their slant with a travel size handle along with several shaving soap and aftershave samples. What in the world have I gotten myself in to?

I guess I should just sit back and enjoy the madness. Thanks guys I am glad to be here.
