Just got a Brush, doing something wrong.

30 year electric razor user with super ultra sensitive girl skin, switched to DE a couple weeks ago due to irritation and ingrown hairs.

Started with:
Merkur 34 HD
Dove for men sensitive shave cream
Astra blade.
No brush
WTG, XTG

Initial results were the expected, a few nicks and cuts, but my skin felt tons better and very little irritation.

Then:
Truefitt and Hill ultimate comfort shaving cream
Crystal blade
No Brush.
WTG, XTG

Amazing shave, smooth, close, no irritation and only one cut which was from the previous shave, skin felt great.

Got a synthetic brush, same T&H cream and crystal blade, had the 2 worst shaves ever, a couple cuts and tons of nicks, irritated skin. I know I'm not doing something right as the same combination no brush gave me the best shave ever.
Since this is a cream and not a soap, maybe not enough water in the mix ?
It feels like I'm shaving off the cream and not the hairs, the difficult areas I had almost no hair removed on the first pass.
Since it's a cream and not a soap, how do I add more water (if that's what I need) to the mix, have more water on the brush ?
