I shave after I have taken a hot shower. I also use a small amount of pre-shave oil. I know some people don't like the oil and complain that it clogs up razors. I use just enough to provide some added protection and don't see any evidence of it on my razor or blade post shave. Like Jim says, its all a matter of personal preference.
