Question about Gillette ball end razor, 1930s.

I have my Grandfather's 1930s(ish) ball end razor that was his primary razor most of his life (he had a second ball end that was part of his railroad work travel kit).

The other night I was using it, and noticed that the ball end was loose. I thought it screwed into place, so I gave it a bit of a twist, and it came off, and out of the handle fell a big chunk of what appeared to be lead.

Does anyone know if Gillette weighted the handles with a piece of lead, or was this something that my Grandfather did?
