Ponderings of weight, handles, heads and ratios?

So whilst enjoying my shave today and having found that my technique allows my mind to wander off a bit whilst shaving I started to ponder about the weight of my razors so after finishing I took a trip to the kitchen (Wife was out) and got out the kitchen scales, not extremely accurate and only goes to the whole gram but if its good enough for cup cakes......

I have three 3 piece razors, A new Parker 97R, a 40's Tech slim flat and 50's Tech slim ball, decided to weigh each component part. all weights are grams.

.......Handle Base plate Head overall
Flat .. 17......... 13......... 13.... 43
Ball... 12.......... 3.......... 15.... 30
Parker 61 ....... 16 ........ 14 ... 91

I found the ball to be most interesting, obviously post war England did not have the levels of brass or heavy metals etc to warrant making relatively cheap items plus due to the war effort where most manufacturers turned their lines to building munitions/weapons/aircraft etc new processes were utilised using lighter materials where metals such as brass were diverted to munitions, these innovations were then used post war, the ball base plate really is light, stamped aluminium coming in at 10g lighter then its predecessor to give more weight the head was made a little heavier by 2g, The handle weight is also reduced although its length was made a little longer maybe to allow for the design of the ball that effectively removed some mass and whilst it as well as the base are not plated the handles weight was not reduced by the same factor or amount as the base was. in the hand it still feels good so I then looked at ratios of the handle to the base plate/head combined, the ratios are approximated for the Flat and Parker to give a better idea of them

.........Handle Base plate+Head approx Ratio
Flat .... 17 ............... 26............... 2:3
Ball .....12................ 18............... 2:3
Parker 61 ................ 30 .............. 1:2

As stated I had to approximate the Flats ratio, but by saying the flats handle is 17 and working 2:3 the base/head will come in at 25.5g so I'm happy with the approximation, as can be seen with the two Techs their ratios are about the same so with that in mind is that something the Gillette were aware of and strived to maintain?

then we come to the parker I only weighed it because I have it and has no bearing on the Techs apart from being a lot heavier and more aggressive, base/head is only 4g heavier then the 40's Tech but in itself weighs the same as the entire Ball and as far as the handle is concerned, well it definitely will last a lifetime.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
