The reasons it's so challenging are well appreciated by all of us: 1) limited maneuvering angles with 2) painful consequences if you gouge down, and 3) even the best preparation seems to result in sensitive nerve endings during those repetitive touch-up passes to get it done right.
As noted above more passes make for more pain so limit that number. The area requires patience and a deft touch. I've found the Gillette diagonal slide can be functionally beneficial and produce a soft touch sensation. Last, remember a well-prepared face surface can seem rougher when you are shaving than it will be after you finish. You may have already shaved the beard below the skin surface after it dries. All these considerations point to remembering shaving is an art, one that needs to be practiced and the skills need time to evolve. Don't give up!
/edit LoL! Oh, and keep an electric razor around for those times you just have to clean up! (It happens far less to me these days but sometimes it's the only way to get'er done and get out the door!)
