Good morning Fellow Honer's, in a quest to further my knowledge in honing and always wanting to try something different i tried Alex's "Ax Method" of honing and was quite surprised.
I have tried it in the past few weeks and have gotten better and better success with it, is it the only method to use, I would say no but I always like trying different things and since I picked up my JNAT from Alex and he did a personal honing video for me on a Henckels razor I figure today was the day to try it again.
For those not familiar with his method look here:
Anyway i took my Henckels Platimum razor and dulled the edge on the side of my JNAT (Alex calls this Joining) this was a previously shave ready razor and i did an HHT before starting, the HHT was mostly 3's except for the toe where it was a 2 and it had be giving me really decent shaves.
So we start this process by joining the edge and tested it with Alfredo's cherry tomato test (Dull as a butter knife) so off we go to the 1K and did 21 one directional strokes (10-5-3-2-1) well did the CTT and not quite there so did another 21 and was good to go.
Next i worked up a DMT #600 slurry with my DMT card and did 21 strokes (had been using my #400 Atoma plate but to chunky) then I used the matching tomo nagura and worked up another finer grit slurry and did 21 strokes (all the strokes are one directional) then on the last I cleared off almost 100% of the slurry and did 21 on a mist then rinsed the stone completely of all slurry and blade as well and did another 21 same reduction in strokes (10-5-3-2-1) then to linen/leather for 25/25.
The HHT I did next was really surprising, I pretty much got 3's in the middle and 4's at toe/heel so back to the stone and did another 21 one directional strokes weight of blade only on water then linen/leather for 25/25, this time HHT was 4's all the way across and 5 at the heel so this time I did another 21 strokes same as above but applied some finger pressure to the area's where I was getting 4's and tested again and got alot more 5's
So did another water only session and pretty much the same so then did my shave and it was outstanding.
As I said, is this the only way to hone, no but it surly allows one to try something different if your bored with your method, you may get better or the same results as your way of honing heck it might even be not as good but try it and see what happens.
The next test is to see how many shaves I can get off this by just stropping but that may be another post
Have a great day and if nothing else hone a razor of you choice with whatever method you choose, for me honing has become quite addictive.
