So, after just a couple months wet shaving (and probably even less than that with a double edge, since part of that time I was just working on lathering technique with a cart), my beautiful EJ de87 has bit the dust. I encountered the dreaded problem that so many low star amazon reviews for it were mentioning: namely that the cast steel it uses in the head is brittle and fragile. I accidentally dropped it on the floor, and as has happened to so many others, the threaded pin on the head that screws into the handle just snapped right off. Now both parts are useless.
So, my question now is what to get next. I do have a Gillette slim that seems pretty decent, but I'm not very good with it at this point, and between my poor technique and the variable adjustment feature I'm not getting very good shaves. I'm thinking maybe I should step back down to a more traditional 2 or 3 piece razor to continue to learn with? I'd be loathe to buy another EJ though after having it break so fast.
What do you guys recommend? My skin is pretty sensitive, and my beard is heavy and tough. So my criteria are that I'd like it to be good for that type of beard, and I'd like it to hopefully be more durable than the EJ and not cost much more than that either. Would a Merkur 34c be a good option (is that the same as the Merkur HD)? Are there other ones I should consider?
