After years of shaving I decided to select my best razors and best blades to determine which were really the cream of the crop. I just finished over two years of testing the different razor and blade combinations. Performance was rated for smoothness, closeness and irritation (or lack thereof). Keep in mind that these are my favorite razors and blades, so I'm able to get decent shaves with any of these combos. However, some are definitely standouts.

Finding the Right Balance
I got my best results when matching milder, smoother blades with aggressive razors and aggressive blades with milder razors.
Biggest Surprises
The best performance was consistently turned in by my lowly Krona when paired with the inexpensive Durasharps. I didn't need to spend a lot of money to get a great shave. On the other hand, the expensive Kai's just didn't work well for me.
Some razors like the R41 and Fatboy performed well with most blades. Other razors like the Krona and Gillette New performed quite differently, depending on blade type. The same goes for blades. Polsilver SIs and Schick Plus Platinums performed very consistently, while Feathers and Astras' performance varied quite a bit depending on the razor.
For me, the aggregate performance scores for modern and vintage blades and razors were a virtual tie. They made great blades and razors in the past. They also make great ones now.
