Ok, I've started with a double edge about a month ago. I was hooked from the start. Here is what I have been using and results I've gotten. Interested in anyone's thoughts. In particular, I have a heavy beard but sensitive skin. tough combo, as you will read below, and I welcome suggestions.
Microtouch One (didn't buy it because I like Rick Harrison, although I am a Pawn Stars fan. Was itchy to start, live in a small city, and this was the ONLY one I could find anywhere.
1953 Gillette Super Speed Flair
1965 Adjustable Slim Handle
Van der Hagen badger brush
Van der Hagen luxury soap
Blades (see below)
Frankly, I like the Microtouch. It has a nice heft. And after experimentation I like the Dorco 300 blades that came with it. It is slightly more aggressive than the Gillette Super Speed. I have seen suggestions that the Super Speed is about equivalent to the Adjustable set on 3, but I find the 3 setting most comparable to the Microtouch with the Super Speed the mildest.
Started on the Microtouch with Dorco 300. Weepers the first day. Fine the second. Decent balance between close and smooth. The SuperSpeed with the Dorco 300 was a mild shave but pretty close. I defer in this regard to my patient wife who allows me to test on her cheek each morning. The Adjustable with the Dorco set at 5 was perhaps the best combo... both in my and wife's opinion. Not too aggressive but close. By now I have settled into two passes. Skin just too sensitive for three passes. WTG and ATG.
Picked up some blade samples. Feather in Super Speed. couple of weepers but pretty smooth. Surprisingly, not as close as couple of combos above. next day, Feather in Adjustable on 3. tore me up. Several weepers! And just average for closeness. don't see a reason to pay more for Feathers but was interesting to try them.
Tried a Wilkinson Sword in Adjustable on 3 today. Not bad. Average on smoothness and closeness but not up to my cheap Dorcos!
The Van der Hagen soap isn't bad. Not big lather, but I don't like it to sloppy. Soak the cake in hot water for a couple, pour it out, soak brush (again, not the best badger but feels good to me), couple shakes. Volume of lather is not much but get dense lather this way.
I finish with Real Shaving Company lotion after a couple cold splashes.
Anyone with more experience have any thoughts on razor or blade combos? Hooked. Love the razors I have but will invest in more ... in the name of science ... if I must ;)
