So I purchased a new dovo from a local vender and now I need a real strop. I just want to buy one strop - a good one - something that will last a lifetime. I have been looking at strops and paddles and I have noticed something that I don't understand.
The paddles (high end ones) usually have some type of give built in to them; either a flexible slot or a spring suspension. I know that when using a strop you want to keep it tight and I see that some just use a bench strop that has no flex. However in looking at all of the models available, and seeing that the hanging, suspension, and slotted paddle dominate the market, I can't help but think that having some flex to strop is an advantage. I don't think this was done by accident.
I know that flex can roll and edge, but isn't a little conforming to the shape of the blade needed as well? There must be some reason the popular designs have "give".........no?
