This is an extension of my thinking that started here: http://ift.tt/2kAOayH
This isn't my final "answer" I was looking for to the question I was seeking there. I definitely plan to buy a Merkur 38C soon (maybe in weeks), I have my eye on a supposedly NOS 1971 Gillette Tech (it isn't in a package but it looks nearly new, though I'd be more likely to jump if it was a year older so I could get a birth year razor for my first vintage), and I may actually buy a Parker Variant soon. As I stated on my most recent post there, I definitely plan to bring my everyday razors when I travel (though if I eventually start buying $50-150 razors, they will always stay home). However, the more I've read about some of the higher quality budget razors, the more I want one (or more).
At these prices, I will probably own more than one of these, unless I'm really turned off by my first "budget" purchase. So this probably isn't a "which should be the only one of these I should own" question but I also don't want to essentially flip a coin either. I see a lot of pros for these online and few reports of many cons so it is hard to decide. I do generally like a longer razor (~4in overall length) but I am new so some variety and experimentation may be in order.
So, here are the final contenders:
-Lord L6.
-RazoRock DE1
-RazoRock Mission
-RaxoRock Barber Pole DE
-Maggard MR1
-Maggard MR6
The Lord, RaxoRock DE1 (and maybe Barber Pole) and the MR1 may be shorter than I prefer (I like the length of my 4" long Parker 76r more than my 3.7" EJ DE86) though that may make them a hair better for travel (while it isn't a lot and won't be a make or break for travel, a little more compact can be good when packing). Also, I probably should have at least one shorter razor (even the EJ isn't all that short) so I can fully judge which I prefer. Also, I think I like the last 4 better than the first two. That makes sense, a more expensive razor, by around double, should seem nicer than a cheaper razor, but in reality there may or may not be much difference in quality.
So, anyone with experience with any of these razors (and even better, with more than one of them), which would you suggest and why?
Oh, and for the Maggard, on their website they suggest both their standard closed comb head (V3) for beginners, but they also suggest their slightly more aggressive open comb (V2) for beginners. I haven't been DE shaving long. Should I wait on the open comb (even if it a less aggressive than usual open comb) until I have more experience, or if I go with a Maggard, would their open comb be a good addition? It definitely would add some more variety to my small collection.
Which budget razor should I buy?
