I just picked up a cheap Feather Popular from Amazon. They are low cost and I had been wanting to try one. The razor was a pleasant surprise. First upon opening the razor I was impressed with the quality of the razor. It is in every way as good as a Schick Krona, Gillette Knack/Slim Twist, or plastic based Super Adjustable. I expected that it would shave about like the SA with plastic base, meaning not that great, but the Feather Popular shaves much better in my opinion.
The blade is held in by the center bar with very little play even when the doors are open and when they are closed the blade is solidly held in place. The exposure of the blade makes me think the razor might prefer a steeper angle when shaving. But upon using the razor I have discovered that this thing works best for me at an extremely shallow angle. In fact the handle is almost sticking straight out and the silo doors firmly against my face. It will work at steeper angles, but there seems to be a decided lack of weight that leads to not cutting as closely.
I prefer the shallow angle anyway so that is what I used. I lathered with AOS Sandalwood soap, using my Zenith boar brush. Did my normal first pass and then rinsed to check for level of beard reduction. And was pleased to find that there was very little stubble left. The second pass was made and with a rinse I had a two pass BBS.
The Feather blade seems so mild mannered and efficient in this razor. For the price this is an excellent razor for the beginner or for the experienced shaver. I will be using this one for a while to see how well it does. The build quality while low cost is not cheap or junky. The razor operates well has a longer than average handle and shaves excellently for me.
I will definitely be giving these as gifts to a few folks around Christmas this year. And using them as gifts for new shavers that I introduce to wet shaving.
