The much maligned or adored Gold Dollar razor is a controversial subject. In the "other place" it has been subjected to much scrutiny and accompanying tut tuts, but to what uses can this humbly priced razor be applied?
I have recently acquired a model 300 to add to my 208 and 209. I use them to experiment with the honing techniques to which I would not subject my beloved vintage collection. They are good to "lend" to potential recruits to the obsessions embraced on the dark side in the knowledge that they may be consigned to eternal flame never to be seen again. Their scales are certainly no work of art but they do contain a blade that can hold an edge. The three that are currently in my possession even centre the blade in the scales, and the 300 was accompanied by a not altogether unattractive leather pouch that could even grace a razor of far higher pedigree. Their appearance and performance suffer in comparison with name brand modern offerings and with those vintage treasures that that are almost sinfully lusted after, but for those not suffering the agonies of RAD they may well suffice.
So, to those who have received these razors in the traditional plain brown paper packaging, to what use or purpose are you dedicating them?
Cheers, George
In praise of the humble Gold Dollar.
