I have tried several types of aftershave, both the splash and creme/balm variety. I love my Pinaud Clubman, which I was introduced to from a sample that was in an order from Whipped Dog. I didn't love the others, either because they irritated my skin or produced poor results or I didn't like the smell. I have finicky little baby skin, so I get rashes easily. I heard about Chiseled Face from an ad/review on Facebook from the West Coast Shaving page. I decided to give theirs a shot, though it seemed a bit expensive to me(again, Pinaud Clubman being my long-standing go-to). After some reading of the scent descriptions, I settled on the Sherlock.
Be advised, I am a neophyte when it comes to these things. I have been wet shaving with a DE or straight for a few years, but don't venture too far out once I've found something that works. This often leads me to get stuck in a rut, or prevents me from finding something that works better. As such, please view this as a general, broad strokes review of a product that impressed me and that hasn't seen a ton of ink.
The Good and Bad:
Good:
It works fantastically. Just enough burn to let you know it's there. I see very little rash or redness. My skin feels nice and tight(in a good way). I see fewer bumps and the nicks tend not to get any worse. So, all the things that all the other lotions/balms/cremes/slashes promised to do for me, but didn't, hahaha.
Bad-ish:
The smell. The description left my mouth watering, but the actual smell isn't this aftershaves strong suit for me. The description is accurate, it just is different than what I was anticipating. Now, it has grown on me a little, and I wouldn't go so far as to say it's bad, but I do wish I had gone with the Ghost Town Barber. For me, the Pinaud smells much better.
So, in the end the only thing going against it for me is that the smell wasn't as awesome as I'd hoped. The performance is such that I will not be going back to anything else that I have previously used. I have a sampler from Captain's Choice ordered, and have big hopes for it. If it doesn't wow me, I know I have something that 100% delivers for me.
Someday I will be better informed and will be able to dazzle you with technical details and scent profiles, but for now my official verdict is...it's real good.
Thanks for reading.
Chiseled Face Sherlock.
