Although I have been DE shaving for a dozen years and have tried many razors of all different kinds (including adjustables, slants, and open combs), I think I have just discovered the perfect DE razor for newbies. Attracted by a sale at West Coast Shaving, I recently ordered a Standard Razor. Terrible name, I know, but a great razor.
The Standard is made of aluminum, so it is very light. At the first stroke beneath my ear, I thought there was something wrong, because it felt as if I were shaving without a blade. But when I rubbed my finger across that area it felt very nicely shaven. The upshot is that this razor is extremely effective while also being extremely non-aggressive. In fact, I would say it is the most comfortable DE shave I have ever experienced. And, most importantly, I have now gotten four consecutive perfect BB shaves using the same blade. I am sure it is possible to get a weeper or cut with the Standard if you are just starting out, but I myself cannot even imagine drawing blood with this razor.
One additional thing I like about the Standard is that the male part of the screw that attaches the handle to the head is actually on the handle rather than the head (which is more normal). This makes the razor much easier to clean since the handle is not hollow.
If I were first starting out with DE shaving but was concerned about overly aggressive razors, this would be the razor I would choose. I'd be instantly hooked for life.
