First let me say that I love my safety razor. It's a vast improvement over my old electric. That part I don't have a problem with.
I'm not so sure about soap/jar cream. I've tried Art of Shaving Unscented cream, Ogallala Bay Rum and Vanilla soap, and DR Harris Lavender cream. I used a Satin Tip - The Purest brush for all of them.
In the case of Ogallala, it lathered extremely well, but I think I was allergic to something in it. I started burning before a blade ever touched my face, which mostly went away after I washed it off. Art of Shaving lathered less well, and also burned before shaving. DR Harris didn't cause that reaction, but even after getting an apparently legit lather, I got razor burn once I actually shaved with it. It didn't feel smooth at all during the shave.
So far, the best thing for me by far has been Barbasol Original. No muss, no fuss, consistent results. A can is a buck and a half and easily lasts me for two weeks, and I think they might even have it at the dollar store. Been meaning to check.
Now I don't have any problem with experimenting, but I don't want to burn my face anymore. I don't want to buy expensive soap only to find out that I'm allergic to it. So I'm willing to try to figure it out with Harris, but I'm not sure what the deal is. Compared to the videos I've seen, my initial load is extremely thin and bubbly, even when using distilled water. Once in the mug I have to beat it like a rented mule to get a decent consistency, and even then it doesn't seem to to perform well. It seems thin once it actually goes on my face.
Also, given the amount of trouble I'm having, is there a good reason I shouldn't stay with Barbasol? What makes soap so great?

I need some convincing on the merits of manual lather.
