Well, I have been at this less than a full week, and I am feeling rather accomplished. Today was my fifth shave with my VDH TTO. I put a new blade in this morning and came away with a BBS with just one WTG pass and a few XTG/ATG touch-ups. I can feel where I left one or two whiskers in a few places, but overall there is just smooth clean skin. I am very happy.
I have only two bits of disappointment:
First, I made my biggest newbie error so far. I put the razor to my face, then realized I needed to move it a bit to the left to get the stroke that I wanted. The razor was still slightly in contact with my face when I started moving it to the left, giving myself the only nick I suffered today. Thankfully, because I was using a new blade on a mild razor, it didn't even bleed and didn't drag or pull. I am also thankful that it is only a few millimeters long. It could have been much worse. I feel like I got off easy. Lesson learned. Always make sure the razor is not in contact with skin before moving laterally. (This should have been obvious and I feel like a moron for being that careless.) I am sharing my blunder because I hope some other newbies will read this and avoid making this same mistake.
Second, after thinking about yesterday's really disappointing shave (the fourth with that blade) I decided I needed to change blades. I popped the blade (one of the VDH blades that were in the package) out of my razor. I decided to test the edge on the blade by pulling it across my thumbnail. (My grandfather showed me this trick as a way to test the edge on a knife blade.) Both edges felt completely dull. I couldn't get it to leave any impression in my thumbnail without risking injury to myself. I would like to be able to get 5-7 shaves out of a single blade, but this one was done after 4 and probably should have been changed after 3. I am really underwhelmed by the longevity of this blade. I hope the one I used today lasts longer. I can't wait for the two blade samplers that I ordered to arrive so that I can try some better blades.
Also, I gave Aqua Velva a try for my post shave this morning. I really like the scent, but I think it may have too much alcohol for me. The burn was quite intense, but I have little to compare it to since I almost never used aftershave previous to trying wet shaving. So far I prefer the Nivea for Men Sensitive Post Shave Balm.
Overall I would say that today's shave was a very positive experience. I got my best shave ever. Had I not made one blunder I would have come away with zero nicks.
